IRS Announces Tax Relief for Taxpayers Impacted by Hurricane Beryl
The IRS has issued a declaration allowing for the postponement of certain tax-filing and tax-payment deadlines for taxpayers residing in or operating a business within a disaster area. Specifically, deadlines that fall between July 5, 2024, and February 3, 2025, are extended, giving affected individuals and businesses until February 3, 2025, to file returns and make tax payments.
This extended deadline applies to various tax obligations, including the quarterly estimated tax payments due on September 16, 2024, and January 15, 2025 as well as individuals who had a valid extension to file their 2023 return due to run out on Oct. 15, 2024. The IRS noted, however, that because tax payments related to these 2023 returns were due on April 15, 2024, those payments are not eligible for this relief.
If you receive a late filing or payment penalty notice from the IRS with a due date within the postponement period, you should contact the IRS at the number listed on the notice to request the abatement of the penalty.
